How to treat epilepsy?
Medicine knows many neuropsychological pathologies. One of the most common, according to statistics, is epilepsy. It occurs in 5-10% of the world’s inhabitants and is expressed in the manifestation of seizures that are caused by pathological discharges in the brain.
With a seizure, temporary violations of the basic functions, such as:
- motor
- sensitive
- vegetative
- mental
Features and types of disease
When studying the disease revealed two forms of epilepsy. One form is congenital in nature, in which case the first seizures usually occur in childhood. In addition, secondary acquired epilepsy is distinguished, which occurs as a result of trauma to the brain or its structures or in metabolic disorders. Any type of neurological disease is chronic and manifests itself in spontaneous, short-term attacks.
The most common form of the disease is temporal lobe epilepsy, in which the focus of activity is concentrated in the temporal lobe of the brain. It can be caused by infections that hit the central nervous system in prenatal development, birth injuries, a traumatic brain injury, various neuroinfections, including bites of an encephalitis tick and much more. The disease manifests itself in simple or complex attacks and requires compulsory treatment.
Types of treatment for temporal lobe epilepsy
The treatment of epilepsy rests on two principles:
- individual approach to each patient
- providing conditions for restoration and normalization
A complete cessation of seizures by taking medication occurs in about half of those suffering from epileptic seizures. The treatment involves traditional and new modern anticonvulsants.
The greatest effect is achieved with the use of surgical intervention. Today, treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy through surgery completely eliminates seizures from more than 75% of those suffering from this serious illness.
Surgery gives new opportunities to cope with this pathology of the brain in the presence of certain indications:
- confirmation of diagnosis
- frequent seizures
- ineffectiveness of anticonvulsant therapy
The operation also helps to cope with seizures if medication is contraindicated due to side effects.
To diagnose the disease, you need to contact a neurologist who will conduct an examination and choose the optimal treatment method, with the greatest effectiveness in a particular case.
